3D CT Scans Improve Varicose Vein Treatment

Varicose veins in the lower legs are a very common condition.  Painful and swollen varicose veins are sometimes treated with surgery.  Because varicose veins are located deep within fat tissue, they can be difficult to see with traditional imaging equipment.  A new imaging procedure, 3D computed tomography (CT) scans provide a thorough three-dimensional view of the complex network of deep varicose veins in the lower legs to allow for the best treatment planning possible.

Researchers at Seoul National University Hospital in Korea found that 3D CT scans provided excellent images of varicose veins in the lower legs in over 75% of participants in their study.  In 99.5% of the cases, the great saphenous vein was well visualized.  By having an excellent view of the varicose veins, surgeons are able to make a more precise treatment plan.
